The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has raised alarm over the intensifying conflict in Sudan, the rising civilian casualties, and deteriorating humanitarian conditions across the country after 842 days of continuous fighting.
In a press statement issued Monday evening, OCHA reported that ongoing violent clashes in North Darfur State have resulted in civilian casualties in recent days. Fighting erupted in El Fasher, the state capital, following earlier combat between armed groups—including near the Abu Shouk displacement camp, which shelters 25,000 people.
The UN office warned that El Fasher residents are facing severe hunger, as the city remains under siege with land-based food supplies cut off for over a year. Basic food prices have surged to more than four times those in other parts of Sudan, leaving many families unable to afford even the most essential items.
OCHA also highlighted the continued spread of cholera across Darfur, with nearly 1,200 cases reported in North Darfur since late June—including about 300 infections among children and at least 20 deaths.
This week, UN OCHA Director of Operations Edem Wosorno is visiting Sudan to assess the humanitarian situation, meet with local officials and aid partners, and speak with those affected by the crisis.
