Last January, the Egyptian Customs Authority and the National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority launched a new decision to impose taxes of 38.5% of the value of the phone on all phones imported from abroad, with the aim of encouraging local production and fighting smuggling.

Within the decision, every citizen coming from abroad is exempt for personal use for a transitional period of 3 months.

Each citizen is allowed one tax-exempt device every X year, and is given a 90-day grace period on additional devices.

After the expiry of the deadline, you will not be able to activate any Egyptian SIM on your new phone, and you will have to pay taxes to be able to use your new phone for calls and messages, which means that if you do not want to use an Egyptian SIM from any of the four available service providers (Vodafone, Etisalat, Wi, Orange), you will simply not pay taxes.

Until recently, the tax rate was known to be 38.5% of the value of the new phone, but a few days ago, many iPhone users in particular noticed increases ranging between 3000 and 6000 Egyptian pounds on their devices, which raises the question, what is the iPhone tax in Egypt.
