Asus ROG Xbox Ally X Gaming Console Review: The Complete Xbox Experience in a Mobile Device..

In a collaboration between Asus and Microsoft, comes the Asus ROG Xbox Ally X, a device that offers a full-screen Xbox experience for Windows mobile devices. After extensively testing the device, the new version features significant upgrades, with ergonomic design (a design that conforms to the shape of the body for improved comfort and efficiency), and software, making it a solid choice in the mobile gaming category. The device includes a three-month Xbox Game Pass PC subscription, and is available at a price starting at $599 for the basic version, and up to $999 for the version under review.

Design: Tangible improvements in comfortROG Xbox Ally X features an unconventional console-like design with a center screen, inspired by the design of the PlayStation Portal, making it thinner than its predecessor (50.9 x 290 x 121 mm) and heavier (718 grams). The plastic frame is perfectly stable, accentuated with a black finish with ROG logos, with soft front surfaces and a rough back for improved grip. The extra thickness enhances the ergonomic design, providing superior comfort during long use, and stands out from the previous version like the ROG Ally X in this aspect. The interior allows easy access to the fan and replaceable storage, with a comprehensive port set including 2x USB-C (one USB 4.0 40Gbps with DisplayPort 2.1 and Power Delivery), USB 3.1 Gen2, 3.5mm jack, microSD reader, and fingerprint reader. The basic version comes with a white frame. Compared to competitors, it's larger and heavier than the Steam Deck (298 x 117 x 49 mm, 669 grams), but more comfortable than the ROG Ally Z1 Extreme (280.4 x 111.2 x 36.9 mm, 608 grams).

Display: Good performance with 7-inch IPS display weaknesses

delivers 1920 1080 (315p/in) resolution, 120Hz refresh rate, and Adaptive Sync (VRR) support, with a glossy finish that delivers smooth gaming performance. However, the wide bezels and lack of an OLED option limit the vibrancy of the colors. Maximum brightness is 490 nits (advertised 500 nits), and 1485:1 contrast ratio. Color coverage includes 93.1% sRGB, 68.3% AdobeRGB, and 66% Display P3, response time (8ms black-white, 11.4ms gray-gray) suitable for gaming. Outdoor visibility is good in strong lighting without direct sunlight. Compared to competitors, the Zotac Zone 7-inch 120Hz OLED display is superior in contrast but less bright, matching the ROG Ally X in the IPS panel, while the MSI Claw 8 AI+ is slightly superior in brightness.

Performance: Cutting-edge power is

based on an AMD Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme processor (8 cores: 3x Zen 5 up to 5.0 GHz, 5x Zen 5c up to 3.3 GHz.) with a Radeon 890M GPU (2900 MHz core, 1000 MHz RAM. With 24 GB LPDDR5x-8000 RAM (8 GB by default for graphics, adjustable) and 1 TB Samsung SSD MZVMA1T0HCLD storage. Processor performance is similar to the Ryzen Z1 Extreme, with 14586 multi-core and 1954 single-core points in Cinebench R23, but it lags 13% behind the Ryzen AI 9 HX 370 in multi-core tasks.
