In a surprising move for longtime Apple users, a new iOS update has been released for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, bringing new life to the aging devices by improving performance and system stability, despite the many years since their original release.

Apple has recently released iOS 26.2.1 and iPadOS 26.2.1 for its latest devices, but the real surprise came with the rollout of an additional update specifically targeting several older devices, including the 13-year-old iPhone 5s and the 12-year-old iPhone 6.

At the same time, the company issued iOS 12.5.8 and iPadOS 12.5.8 for users of the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, as well as the iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and the sixth-generation iPod touch. Apple recommends installing this update as soon as possible.

Although the new update does not introduce new features, it extends the security certificates required for services such as iMessage and FaceTime, as well as device activation. As a result, installing the update is essential to ensure continued use of these devices beyond January 2027.

It is worth noting that Apple released iOS 12 nearly eight years ago, yet the company continues to provide limited support for older devices, reflecting its commitment to extending the lifespan of its products. Apple had also released a security update for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 back in 2023.
