European Union lawmakers have given preliminary approval to a trade deal with the United States, paving the way for final ratification before a deadline that US President Donald Trump has threatened to trigger with new tariffs.

The European Parliament's trade committee gave the green light to the agreement on Tuesday, just days after EU negotiators overcame outstanding differences and finalized the text.

The vote was expected after Trade Committee Chairman Bernd Lange expressed his support for the agreement. The full European Parliament is now scheduled to vote on ratifying the agreement on June 16, with EU member states expected to give their final approval shortly thereafter.
