An electric car sold for $40 million at auction..

Ferrari's first all-electric NV has defied criticism, selling for $40 million to become the most expensive new car ever sold at auction.

The Tailor Made Luce shattered the previous record at a charity auction held by Sotheby's during Monterey Car Week in California. The previous record was set last year when a custom-modified Ferrari Daytona SP3 sold for $26 million, according to a statement from the automaker.

Ferrari unveiled the €550,000 ($636,356) Luce in May, amid a wave of criticism and a drop in the company's share price. The model represents a departure from Ferrari's long-standing heritage of producing sports cars powered by internal combustion engines.
