UAE says it repelled some 750,000 cyberattack attempts on critical sectors

The UAE's national cybersecurity system has detected and countered roughly 750,000 attempted cyberattacks in recent months, the country's Government Cyber Security Council said on Tuesday, warning of a growing tempo of attacks aimed at critical sectors, chief among them energy and education.

The attempts included remote code execution, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks and phishing, as well as attacks powered by artificial intelligence and other advanced threat types, the council said. It linked the trend to the rapid evolution of cyberattack techniques worldwide.

According to the council, detection and response are handled through an integrated national framework built on continuous monitoring, early detection, advanced analysis and proactive response, coordinated with the relevant national authorities. The aim, it said, is to strengthen the protection of digital infrastructure and raise the readiness and resilience of critical sectors.

The council stressed that the high number of recorded attempts does not necessarily mean successful breaches occurred. Instead, it said, the figure reflects the effectiveness of national capabilities in identifying threats, dealing with them and limiting their risks, helping to keep digital services running.

The UAE is continuing to build its cybersecurity capabilities by deploying advanced technologies and artificial intelligence and by deepening cooperation among the agencies involved, the council added, with the goal of improving its cyber defences and keeping pace with emerging threats.

Protecting digital infrastructure and critical sectors is a national priority, the council said, describing its ongoing, proactive efforts as a reflection of the UAE's commitment to securing its cyberspace and sustaining vital services.
