The US military has so far spent more than $47 billion on the war against Iran, according to Pentagon data seen by Reuters, an increase of more than 25 percent over the Defense Department's estimate in July.

Replenishing munitions accounts for the largest share of the war's operating costs, at more than $29 billion, while replacing military equipment has cost over $6 billion. The figures do not make clear whether they include the cost of repairing damage to US bases hit by Iranian missile and drone attacks.

Under the latest cost estimates, the Air Force has spent $7.6 billion to cover operations by dozens of fighter and bomber squadrons. The Navy has incurred $1.5 billion in costs to deploy more than 24 warships, including several aircraft carriers, and supporting Army ground forces in the region has cost $2.1 billion.

According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), more than 50,000 troops in total are taking part in the mission.

The conflict is currently at a standstill, though there is a strong possibility that fighting could resume after the US congressional midterm elections, scheduled for November 3.
