Two weeks after the initial announcement of GPT 5.6 models and the US government's ban on OpenAI's public release, the "limited trial" period has finally ended, and the models are now available to the public. Unlike previous generations, which relied on a single model in different sizes such as mini and nano, this GPT-5.6 family consists of three classes, each named rather than numbered: Sol, the most powerful model for complex and in-depth tasks (available only in paid plans); Terra, the balanced model for everyday tasks; and Luna, the lightest and most affordable model. When will OpenAI settle on a clear name for its models? Lately, we've seen many relatively rapid releases of AI models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and others. As a result, the development in capabilities or intelligence compared to the previous generation remains minimal, and the focus shifts to other aspects. For example, the GPT 5.6 family focuses on delivering the same or better performance at about half the cost and time!
