Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg presented his detailed vision for the future of what he calls "personal superintelligence" and the benefits he expects it to bring to humanity. His statement, published on August 10, made it clear that his vision "will only be realized with full authorization from users regarding their personal data." However, experts interviewed by Asharq Al-Awsat warned that the "personal intelligence project" could face a crisis of user trust.
Zuckerberg stated that in the future, everyone will have a highly capable "personal agent" who understands them and their goals, working around the clock to improve their relationships, health, career, finances, home, and hobbies, thus freeing up more time to enjoy life. This proposal raises several concerns, most notably that Meta wants users to activate data tracking that would allow access to highly sensitive personal information—something difficult to promote given the company's history of using such data for questionable purposes or allowing other parties to do so.
According to observers, Meta faced accusations in 2016 of leaking the data of millions of Facebook users to Cambridge Analytica without their knowledge, and that this data was used for political advertising purposes. The fallout from this scandal led to a sharp decline in public trust in the company, to the point that Facebook ranked last in Business Insider's 2019 Digital Trust Index.
Al-Sir Ali Saad, an associate professor of new media at Umm Al Quwain University, believes that the data Meta currently possesses—such as interactions, likes, browsing history, social connections, and interests—is enormous and ideal for targeted advertising and recommendations.
However, he adds: “Despite this, this data is insufficient for the ambition of building a personal assistant that manages the details of a user’s life. For artificial intelligence to manage your life and act as a personal secretary or intelligent assistant, Zuckerberg will need to target much deeper layers of sensitive and real-time data, such as tone of voice, facial expressions, eye movements, and even what you look at in the real world and your physical interaction with your surroundings. It will also need to know your sleep patterns, physical activity, diet, and even your mood swings by linking the assistant to health technologies and smartwatches.”
